History – The beginning of our success story

Deeply rooted? That’s the BAUER Group. An unique history full of emotions and traditions. Founded more than 230 years ago, Bauer has grown to a world-leader in specialist foundation engineering and as a developer of drilling rigs – the essence of our success.

From Copper Smith to Well Constructor

Started in 1790 as a copper smithy in Schrobenhausen, Germany, and developed into a well constructor in the early 20th century, Bauer is today a global player in the construction sector.

Beginning of specialist foundation engineering

In the early 1950’s, Bauer started successfully to expand into the specialist foundation engineering business and is as BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH a world-leading expert onshore as well as near-shore.

First in-house drill rig development

At the end of the 1960’s, Bauer had designed and manufactured its first own anchor boring rig UBW 01 to support the specialist business of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH. This can be considered to be the beginning of BAUER Maschinen GmbH.

Environmental engineering becomes part of the portfolio

The 1990’s were shaped by further specialisations and entering new business areas. While specialist foundation engineering and machines had traditionally been the core focus, the company expanded its expertise into environmental engineering. Today, BAUER Resources GmbH is our specialist in environmental services, water well construction, and constructed wetlands.

Going Offshore

Based on decades of experiences in specialist foundation engineering and the hunger for new challenges, Bauer made their first steps into the offshore renewable industry in 2005.

In 2011, Bauer developed its first subsea drill, the foundation for our latest Dive Drill and subsea drilling and grouting methods. After more offshore projects led by the Offshore Foundations department of Bauer Spezialtiefbau, BAUER Offshore Technologies GmbH became a subsidiary of the BAUER Group in 2022. Bauer Offshore Technologies brings together the company’s experiences and expertise and support the development of the subsea drilling equipment at Bauer Maschinen.

The world's most spectacular and largest construction projects

Burj Khalifa

Dubai, UAE

In early 2004, Bauer started constructing the foundations for the then tallest building in the world: the Burj Khalifa. It took 850 piles in total to provide a solid base for the highest free-standing structure at its time.

The world's most spectacular and largest construction projects

Petronas Twin Towers

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The tallest building in the world until 2004 and until today the world’s tallest twin towers, the Petronas Twin Towers, stand on ground improved by Bauer. We closed cavities in the ground down to a depth of 160 m, reducing the loss of overburden and preventing cavity collapse.

The world's most spectacular and largest construction projects

The Palm

Dubai, UAE

Today’s largest man-made island, Palm Island or Palm Jumeirah, rests on sandy ground that was compacted by Bauer. Up to 17 of our deep vibrators were at work to consolidate the ground for some 4500 buildings being considered among the most luxurious in the world.

The world's most spectacular and largest construction projects

Hong-Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

Hong Kong

In 2009, the construction of the world’s longest fixed sea crossing kicked off: the Hong-Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge with a total length of 55 km. For the “Hong Kong Link Road” section Bauer’s scope were 230 offshore bored piles with lengths of up to 115 m.
